An online slot is a random-number game with a picture layer on top. You set a stake, press spin, and the software has already selected the outcome before the reels finish moving. Two numbers in the game's info screen carry almost all the useful information: RTP, which sets what the game costs you over the long run, and volatility, which sets how far your balance swings on the way there.

How do online slots work?
Every licensed online slot runs on a random number generator (RNG) that produces numbers continuously, whether anyone is playing or not. When you press spin, the game takes the current numbers, maps them to reel positions, and works out what you have won. The spinning animation, the near-miss stop, the sound design — all of it is presentation for a result that already exists.
That has four practical consequences:
- Spins are independent. A game has no record of your last 200 losing spins and no obligation to correct them.
- Turbo and slam-stop change nothing but the animation length. Where regulators allow those buttons at all, they shorten the show, not the odds.

Reels, paylines and symbols: what actually pays
A slot grid is columns (reels) by rows. Classic machines use three reels and one line. Most modern video slots use a 5×3 or 6×4 grid, and the win system varies more than the grid does.

243 and 117,649 are just the arithmetic of the grid — 3⁵ and 7⁶. More ways does not mean better odds; the paytable is scaled to match.
The symbol set is standard across almost every studio:
- Low-pay symbols — card royals or simple shapes. These fill most of the grid and pay a fraction of your stake.
- High-pay symbols — the themed characters. These carry the base-game return.
- Wilds — substitute for standard symbols. Often the vehicle for multipliers, expansion or stickiness.
- Scatters — pay or trigger regardless of position, and usually the entry point to free spins.
- Bonus symbols — trigger a specific feature, sometimes only on named reels.
What does a 96% RTP actually cost you?
Return to player is the share of everything wagered that a game returns over its full theoretical cycle. The house edge is what's left: a 96% RTP game has a 4% edge, so every $1 that passes through it costs 4 cents on average.
The number people underestimate is not the edge — it's the turnover. Slots are the fastest game in the building.

Expected cost = stake × spins × (1 − RTP). Real sessions land nowhere near the average in either direction; this is the long-run price of the time, not a forecast for tonight.
Three qualifiers matter:
- RTP is a long-run figure, measured across millions of simulated spins. Across a 300-spin session, the distribution of results dominates completely and the average tells you almost nothing.
- Progressive jackpot games hide part of the return in the jackpot. The published RTP includes the pooled prize, so the base game pays back less than the headline suggests, and only the eventual winner collects the difference. Some pooled jackpots also require a qualifying stake or scale your entry chance to bet size — that's in the rules panel, not the marketing.

Why do two 96% slots feel completely different?
Volatility. RTP sets the long-run cost; volatility describes how results are spread around it. Two games with identical RTP can produce completely different sessions because one returns small amounts constantly and the other holds most of its return back for a feature that arrives every few hundred spins.

Two supporting numbers help you read a game before you play it:
- Hit frequency — the share of spins that return anything at all. Not every studio publishes it; when it's there, it's in the info screen.
- Max win multiplier — the cap, quoted as a multiple of stake. A game advertising 10,000× or more is telling you it's high volatility, whatever the description says.
Bonus features explained
Features are where modern slots concentrate their return, and on high-volatility games a large majority of the RTP can sit inside the free-spin round rather than the base game. The common ones:
- Free spins — triggered by scatters, usually with a modifier attached (extra wilds, a rising multiplier, expanded reels). Retriggers are game-specific.
- Hold and spin / respin — cash-value symbols lock in place and you get a fixed number of respins that reset each time a new symbol lands.
- Wild variants — expanding, sticky and walking wilds all extend a single wild across more spins or more of the grid.
- Multipliers — applied to the win, not to the chance of getting one. A global multiplier that climbs through a feature is the main driver of big results in cascade games.
- Cascades or tumbles — winning symbols are removed, new ones drop in, and the chain continues while wins keep landing.
- Gamble feature — a double-or-nothing on a completed win. Some are close to an even-money coin flip, some carry their own edge. The paytable states the terms; if it doesn't, skip it.
- Feature buy — pay a fixed multiple of your stake, often 50× to 100×, to enter the free spins directly. The bought-feature RTP is quoted separately and is not automatically better than the base game. Feature buys aren't offered in every regulated market, so a missing button is a licensing decision rather than a studio one.
- Jackpots — fixed, must-drop (which pay by a set time or amount), or pooled progressive across many operators.
How to play online slots, step by step
1. Check the licence, then open a game in demo mode. Demo play uses the same maths and costs nothing, which makes it the cheapest way to learn a feature set. 2. Read the info screen before the first real spin. You want four things: RTP, volatility, max win, and whether paytable values are line-bet or total-bet multiples. 3. Which slot mistakes cost beginners the most?

What is the $20 method for slots, and does the $100 version work?
The $20 method is a bankroll rule carried over from land-based casinos: load $20 into a machine, play a fixed short run of spins — commonly five to ten — then cash out whatever remains and move to a different game. The $100 slot strategy is the same idea scaled up: split $100 into five $20 buy-ins, or set a hard stop-loss with a walk-away target on the upside.
Both do something real. They cap your exposure per game, force regular stops, and convert an open-ended session into a countable set of decisions. That's genuinely useful, and it's the same reasoning behind unit staking in any other form of gambling.
Neither does anything to the maths. Moving machines doesn't reset anything, because there was nothing to reset. The RNG doesn't know you switched games, and a fresh $20 buys the same odds the last $20 did.
The number worth internalising is turnover. Expected loss applies to everything you wager, not what you deposit.
